Games for CME?

“Interactive Moments” To Enhance Serious Education

Gaming formats bring a new way to make learning effective in CME by interjecting engaging “interactive moments” into didactic and static learning modules, such as PPt presentations with talking heads and slides. These interludes allow you to talk directly with your learners and interrupt the ennui that may occur as an educational activity proceeds.

Games allow competitiveness — inherent in many learners – with instant analysis of how they are doing compared to their peers — on each question and in total for the testing activity or survey. This instant peer involvement adds to the “rubbing-shoulders” feel inherent in live activities at meeting and conventions. Games also can make complicated information easier to grasp by:

  • De-mystifying concepts
  • Breaking down many-faceted medical and scientific processes into easy-to-understand parts
  • Underlining and reinforcing key learnings
  • Applying new medical insights into every-day patient care

CMEpilot’s new promotion, “Interactive moments,” using a game called “Bug Assassin” is aimed at getting educators to think about how they can use interactivity to engage their learners and to alert them to how easy it is to incorporate some entertainment into serious education.

Bug Assassin is the first in a series featuring different approaches to interactive moments. The game is adapted from one testing reflex speed and consistency to aid in diagnosis of brain injury.
